Hybrid 4 Technology

In 2011, PSA Peugeot Citroën launched the first diesel-hybrid passenger car featuring the innovative Hybrid4 technology. Low on CO2 emissions, the Hybrid4 system combines the advantages of a diesel engine with those of an electric motor to bring motorists enhanced features and performance.

When reviewing the development of its first hybrid car, PSA Peugeot Citroën's aim was to make a breakthrough on CO2 emissions. To that end, the Group combined a diesel engine and electric motor while safeguarding top-level driving pleasure. The system, making its debut on a passenger car, hinged on innovative ideas. The Group opted for an ingenious technical architecture using an HDi diesel unit at the front of the vehicle combined with an electric motor fit on the rear axle.

A virtuous alliance of diesel and electric

The Hybrid4 system's diesel engine and the electric motor function independently. The electric unit is fed by the battery located under the boot. The battery is charged during deceleration by the electric motor, which also serves as an alternator. If needed, the high-power e-HDi Stop and Start system can also feed electricity to the battery, allowing for extremely smooth running since the battery can be recharged in all operating phases.

The electric motor can work alone or as a back-up to the HDi diesel engine to reduce fuel consumption or to help power the vehicle.

The hybrid that adapts to all situations

Users benefit from a wealth of advantages:

The innovative architecture of Hybrid4 also brings motorists four driving settings, selected using a thumbwheel on the central console.

The first setting, "Auto", manages the entire system by calculating the best compromise between fuel consumption and performance. "4WD" mode activates the engine and the motor to ensure four-wheel drive and improve traction on tough ground. In "ZEV" (zero emission vehicle) mode, only the electric motor is in operation, with no CO2 emissions. The "Sport" setting combines the power of the engine and the motor for more dynamic behaviour.

A competitive advantage

For PSA Peugeot Citroën, the Hybrid4 system represents a clear advantage over the competition. The four Group vehicles equipped with the system – the Peugeot 3008, 508 and 508 RXH and the Citroën DS5 – are the only cars in their category to offer a combination of four-wheel drive, 200 bhp and CO2 emissions this low.

Hybrid4 is also relevant from a manufacturing point of view. The independent rear axle requires no major modifications in relation to the original powertrain, so the technology can be adapted to different vehicles.
